Biography: Dame Vera Lynn, birth name Vera Margaret Welch and known as her stage name Vera Lynn, is an English singer born on March 20, 1917 in East Ham, now part of Greater London. She was born in plumber’s family and grew up with a Cockney accent which she has never abandoned. She began singing at the age of seven at the working men’s club and the first solo record titled “Up the Wooden Hill to Bedforshire” was released in 1936. Her career flourished during the WWII. In 1940 she began her radio program Sincerely Yours, sending messages to British soldier serving abroad. Later she toured in Burma, India, Egypt giving concerts to British troops. Her song “We’ll meet Again” became one of the emblems of war times in Great Britain. She was awarded by Order of the British Empire and received a special “Spirit of the 20th Century” Award.
