Biography: American folk, blues, alternative rock, pop and soul singer–songwriter Tracy Chapman was born on March 30, 1964, in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S. She was raised by her mother. Despite not having much money, her mother recognized Tracy's love of music and bought her a ukulele at the age of three. She began playing guitar and writing songs at the age of eight. She says she may have been first inspired to play the guitar by the TV Show Hee Haw. During college, she began street-performing and playing guitar in coffeehouses in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She quickly gained popularity in 1988 with her self-titled breakthrough album, which was awarded by the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and "Fast Car" gained Chapman an award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 31st Grammy Awards in early 1989.
