American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins was formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. At that time the band consisted of Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar) and James Iha (guitar/backing vocals), D'arcy Wretzky (bass guitar/backing vocals), Jimmy Chamberlin (drums/percussion), and Melissa Auf der Maur (bass guitar). The breakthrough to the mainstream success happened in 1993 with the release of their second album Siamese Dream. The next double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness continued their success and the group was one of the most popular during the 90s. The group got 2 Grammy Awards in the nomination Best Hard Rock performance. In 2000 the band broke up but in six years it was officially announced about their reunion. Right now only Billy Corgan performs under the name The Smashing Pumpkins.
