American pop singer, pianist, and songwriter Neil Sedaka was born on March 13, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He demonstrated musical aptitude in his second-grade choral class, and when his teacher sent a note home suggesting piano lessons, his mother took a part-time job in an Abraham & Straus department store for six months to pay for a second-hand upright. And now, it is hard to imagine the history of rock and roll without the many contributions of Sedaka. For over four decades, his timeless standards have helped change the face of popular music. The best-known Billboard Hot 100 hits of his career are, "The Diary", "Oh! Carol", "You Mean Everything to Me", "Calendar Girl", "Stairway to Heaven", "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do".
