Madelaine Peyroux is an American jazz singer, songwriter and guitarist born in 1974 in Athens, Georgia, the United States. She is famous for her vocal style comparable to the one of Billy Holiday. Peyroux cites many artists to be her major influence including Billy Holiday, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, Charlie Chaplin, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and some others. Peyroux spent her childhood in New York and Southern California and when she was 13 she moved to Paris with her mother. She started singing at the age of 15 joining the street musicians. Her debut album Dreamland was released in 1996 through Atlantic records. The album allowed her to open for such prominent singers like Cesaria Evora and Sarah McLachlan and to feature jazz festivals.
