American experimental rock, glam rock, art rock and protopunk musician Lou Reed (birth name Lewis Allan Reed) was born on March 2, 1942. In 1963, he moved to New York City, and started working as a songwriter for Pickwick Records. In 1964, he enjoyed some success with the single, "The Ostrich", which was a parodic novelty song of famous "dance songs" such as "The Twist". In 1965, he and John Cale formed The Velvet Underground. Later they recruited guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker. As a solo singer he achieved mainstream success with his album, Sally Can't Dance, which became Reed's highest-charting album. The album also produced the singles, "N. Y.
