Canadian folk rock, folk pop and jazz singer-songwriter and record producer Joni Mitchell (birth name Roberta Joan Anderson) was born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. As a teenager, she taught herself ukulele and, later, guitar. She began performing at parties, which eventually led to busking and gigs playing in coffeehouses and other venues in Saskatoon. After finishing high school at Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon, she attended the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary for a year, but then left, telling her mother: "I'm going to Toronto to be a folksinger". She achieved mainstream success in 1973 with her breakthrough album, Court and Spark, which reached number 2 in the United States and number 1 in Canada and eventually received a Double Platinum certification by the RIAA, the highest during Mitchell's career.
