Janelle Monae, birth name Janelle Monae Robinson, is an American indie pop and soul singer, dancer, songwriter and performer. She was born on December 1, 1985 in Kansas City, Kansas. At first she wanted to make a career on Broadway but changed her mind and decided to return to music. She was ready to release her debut solo work in 2007 but the plans were postponed. The concept based album was planned to be out of 4 parts. The first part titled Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) was released in 2007. Later she signed to Bad Boy Records, and the label released a new version of the EP. It received very good reviews and earned Monae her first Grammy nomination in the category Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the single “Many Moons”.
