When label founder and president Seymour Stein heard his demo, he said, "He sounds like Bob Dylan". In 1987, he released his breakthrough debut album, Rhyme Pays, which peaked at number 93 on the Billboard 200 music chart and number 26 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums, and also was certified gold by the RIAA.
