Harry Belafonte, birth name Harold George Belafonete was born on March 1, 1927 in New York City, New York, the United States. He is an American musician, singer, actor and social activist. He made popular Caribbean music style in the 1950s and thus he was labeled as “King of Calypso”. He released his mega-album Calypso in 1956. The album reached the top spot of the Billboard chart and spent there 31 weeks. It has become the first album ever, which sold more than 1 million copies. Two songs «Banana Boat song» «Farewell to Jamaica» became real hits and created a fashion for calypso music. Next year he released one more hit song “Mary’s Boy Child” which topped in the UK.
