Alexander Nestor Haddaway, better known as Haddaway, was born on January 9, 1965 in Trinidad and Tobago. He is half-Dutch, half Trinidadian. When his parents separated, he moved to Europe with his father and later joined his mother in the United States. Then, he moved back in Europe and settled in Cologne, Germany, where he began playing football in the German Football league, selling carpets and making music in his spare time. He was signed by German label Coconuts Records and rose to fame with his debut single “What is Love”. The song became an international hit and he was quickly propelled to the stardom. The single reached number one in many European countries, including France, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Ireland and others.
