American pop rock and pop punk band Good Charlotte from Waldorf, Maryland, was formed in 1996. The band comprises Joel Madden (lead vocals), Benji Madden (lead guitar, backing vocals), Billy Martin (keyboards, rhythm guitar), Paul Thomas (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Dean Butterworth (drums). They took their name from the children's book called "Good Charlotte: The Girls of Good Day Orphanage," written by Carol Beach York. The band started out by playing at small bars. They achieved mainstream success in 2002 with their breakthrough album, The Young and the Hopeless, which produced five singles, "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous", "The Anthem", "Girls & Boys", "The Young & the Hopeless" and "Hold On".
