English classical Renaissance and Baroque music singer Alfred Deller (31 May 1912 – 16 July 1979) was born in Margate (district of East Kent), England. As a child, he sang in the local church choir. In the early 1940s, he joined the choirs of Canterbury and St. Paul's Cathedrals. During this time, he caught the attention of the British composer Michael Tippett who later introduced Deller to the public. In the late 1940s, he founded the Deller Consort band. He achieved mainstream success in 1960 when he performed the role of Oberon in Benjamin Britten's opera A Midsummer Night's Dream. This performance was highly praised by critics.
