British progressive jazz-rock band Colosseum was formed in 1968. The band comprises Jon Hiseman (drums), Dick Heckstall-Smith (saxophones), Tony Reeves (bass), Dave Greenslade (organ, vocals), Jim Roche (guitar), James Litherland (guitar, vocals) and Louis Cennamo (bass). They made their live debut in Newcastle and were promptly recorded by influential BBC Radio One DJ John Peel for his Top Gear Radio program. This appearance gained them valuable exposure and critical acclaim. They achieved mainstream success in 1969 with their breakthrough album, Valentyne Suite, which produced several singles such as "Elegy", "Butty's Blues", "The Machine Demands a Sacrifice" and "Valentyne Suite Theme One: January's Search".
