Biography: American rock, heartland rock and folk singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen (birth name Bruce Frederick Joseph Springstee) was born on September 23, 1949, in Long Branch, New Jersey, U.S. He had been inspired to take up music at the age of seven after seeing Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show. At 13, he bought his first guitar for $18; later, his mother took out a loan to buy the 16-year-old Springsteen a $60 Kent guitar, an event he later memorialized in his song "The Wish". He achieved worldwide success with his breakthrough album, Born to Run (1975), which was ranked number 18 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
