Australian post-punk group The Birthday Party was formed in Melbourne in 1976. The band members were Nick Cave – vocals, Mick Harvey - guitar, drums, vocals, Tracy Pew - bass, vocals Rowland S. Howard - guitar, vocals and Phill Calvert – drums. The group wasn’t commercially successful but made its members popular in their solo career. However the band had a cult status in the UK and they were critically acclaimed.The group is said to be the darkest post-punk group of that time and it was often referred as a gothic rock band, or new wave. At first the group was called The Boys Next Door and under this name they released Door, Door LP. After changing the name for The Birthday Party they issued Prayers on Fire, Junkyard.
