| Biography: |
American hard rock, alternative rock and post-grunge band Audioslave was formed 2001. The band comprised ex-Soundgarden frontman and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell and the former instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine: Tom Morello (lead guitar), Tim Commerford (bass and backing vocals) and Brad Wilk (drums). The original idea for the group's name was "Civilian", but it was dropped when members found out that it was already taken. By combining 70's style hard rock riffing with alternative rock, the band created a distinctive sound. The band quickly gained popularity with its debut album, Audioslave (2002), which was certified triple platinum in the US. This album also yielded five singles, "Cochise", "Like a Stone", "Show Me How To Live", "I Am the Highway" and "What You Are". The album's second single, "Like a Stone", topped both the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts, and has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
