Al Jolson, birth name Asa Yoelson was born on May 26, 1886 in Seredžius, Lithuania, Russian Empire and died on October 23, 1950 in San Francisco, California, the United States. He was a famous American singer, comedian and actor, the first open Jewish who became the entertainer in America. He has become of the most influential artists of his era and such famous singers like Bob Dylan, Bing Crosby, and Judy Garland named him as one of their influences. During the 1930s, he was America’s most paid and most popular entertainer. He sang in such genres like vaudeville, pop, and jazz. He was against black discrimination at Broadway and paved the way to the fame for many great black musicians like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller and others.
